The Ex Stainless Steel Knife Set

September 28, 2006 By Delia

the-ex-knife-set-9-28-2006.gifI found the perfect gadget to accompany your Voo-Dude Toothpick Holder, The Ex. Take out your kitchen aggression on The Ex Stainless Steel Knife Set.  This hilarious knife set holds five knives in various slots on his body.

You not only get five high quality stainless steel knives, you get a plastic person to put them in.  Available in black or red.  And if you really want to take out those angry feelings, post a photograph on the Ex’s face, that might do the trick.  Cost, $80.  A lot for angry knives, maybe an anger management class is better suited for that amount of money.

Cake Baking & Decorating Tips

September 26, 2006 By Delia

cake-decorating-tips-9-26-2006.jpg

I came across a fantastic & very helpful list of helpful hints on decorating & baking cakes.  While we won’t dare to dream as big as Chef Duff Goldman, we can come within a few thousand feet, right?

Taking the Stress out of Complex Cake Decorating Tips:

  • 4 Days before: Make Frosting
  • 3 Days before: Divide and Color Frosting
  • 2 Days before: Make and Bake Cake
  • 1 Day before: Frost and Decorate Cake

Store cake in the refrigerator. Cover completely with plastic wrap to prevent drying. Use toothpicks to keep plastic wrap from smashing icing.

Cake Baking Tips:

  • Grease and flour your pan every time.
  • Allow pan to cool 5-10 minutes before removing cake from pan
  • If checking cake with a toothpick, check in multiple places. To insure there aren’t pockets of dough that aren’t finished.
  • Wrap the outside of your cake pan with a wet towel before baking. Secure towel ends with safety pins. The wet towel will help the cake bake evenly, reducing the need to level the cake before decorating.

Frosting / Decorating Cake Tips:

  • Always frost when cake has completely cooled.
  • If using prepared frosting, or frosting that has sat for a while, whip 1-2 minutes before using.
  • For an extremely smooth base frosting, measure 1-1/2 cups frosting and thin with 1-2 teaspoons light corn syrup.
  • If using multiple colors of frosting on cake, mix frosting colors in small airtight containers before you start decorating.
  • If using a fluffy frosting, it is best to frost the cake on the day it is being served.

Ace of Cakes Duff Goldman

September 26, 2006 By Delia

charm-city-cakes-montage-9-26-2006.JPG

Wow.  What do you say about such an interesting & genius chef as cake chef extraordinaire Duff Goldman?

Besides having his own funky, creative cake shop paradise, Charm City Cakes, in Baltimore this culinary master has a new show on the Food Network.  On Thursday nights make sure you have your TV tuned to the Ace of Cakes, I promise you won’t regret it.

A little bio on Chef Goldman:  Duff has been in the kitchen since the age of four when his mom caught him watching Chef Tell while swinging a meat cleaver.  Goldman stared working professionally since he was 14 and we  haven’t been able to get him out of the kitchen since.

Just look at these amazing cake creations, how does he do it?  From Starry Night, a game of Quidditch, a flower pot, an elegant wedding cake to an actual Canon camera, this chef can wield his way around sweets with perfection.

And I thought I was a master when I created that Elmo cake for a nephew!

Eat well & Chef Goldman often!

Make Your Own Fortune Cookies Recipe

September 25, 2006 By Delia

fortune-cookies-recipe-9-25-2006.jpg

You have them in every Chinese restaurant, now you can make them yourself.  Try on this highly original, tasty & creative Fortune Cookie Recipe by I Love Milk & Cookies.  Enjoy & help yourself to a happy, healthy Monday.

Ingredients:

  • 5 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 4 large egg whites
  • 1 cup confectioner’s sugar
  • 1 cup plain all purpose flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • 3 tablespoon heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract
  • Non-stick cooking spray

What’s next:

Go ahead & preheat your oven to 200 F or 93 C & spray a baking sheet with some non-stick cooking spray.

Melt butter in a small saucepan over low heat, set aside.

Using an electric mixer, in a bowl, combine egg whites and sugar and beat on medium speed for about 30 seconds.

Add flour and salt and continue to beat until just combined.

Add the melted butter, heavy cream, vanilla or almond extract and mix until combined.

Pour 1 tbsp of the batter onto the prepared baking sheet, using the back of spoon, spread the batter into a thing 5 inch circle. Repeat this on the other side of the baking sheet.

Bake for about 6-8 minutes until the edges are lightly browned. Make sure to only bake 2 at a time as they will make folding them easier.

Remove from oven. Working as quickly and carefully as possible, lift one cookie off the sheet.

Place a fortune onto the centre of the cookie and fold it in half, pinching the top together to form a semi-circle.

Hold the cookies with both hands at each end and using the edge of a bowl as a guide, bending the two ends together, over the bowl’s edge. This whole process should take about 10 seconds.

Place the fortune cookie on the kitchen towel to cool, and shape the second cookie.
Repeat until all the batter is used up. To speed up the process, bake four cookies at a time, staggering two cookie sheets by 4 minutes to give you time to shape.

Alternatively you can thread the fortune through the cookie when it has cooled to achieve a different look.

Fried Krispy Kreme Donuts Recipe

September 22, 2006 By Delia

krispy-kreme-donut-recipes-9-22-2006.jpg

According to SlashFood you can do just about anything with a Krispy Kreme donut.  From a Krispy Kreme chicken sandwich to Kreme burgers to Krispy bread pudding.  I think I’m grossed out already.

But the best, according to some, way to eat a fresh Krispy Kreme donut is to fry your sweet buy in butter.  Here’s how:

  • In a hot skillet, melt butter
  • Place donut in skillet & fry her up til golden
  • Eat and maybe think about a good Pilates session.

However you like your Krispy Kreme donuts, just make sure you have a good cup of joe and a close friend to go along with them.
