How to Be Always Ready to Feed Unexpected House Guests

August 23, 2013 By Delia

What could be worse than opening your door to an unexpected house guest? Probably opening the door to five unexpected guests asking to spend the night due to an emergency? And then you remember, you have only enough food for your own family for the day since grocery day is tomorrow yet. These are the times you wish there is a courteous way of turning away visitors on your doorstep. But alas, there is none.

The only way not to encounter this potentially embarrassing situation is to be ready for guests at all times.

Stock Up on the Basics

We are all familiar with budget constraints that make it almost impossible to buy a little more food supply than we actually need. However, we can never be ready to accept unexpected guests in our home unless we make sure that there is always something to be found in the fridge and pantry. Nothing fancy really, just a few food staples that are regularly used anyway like frozen vegetables, pasta, ground beef, eggs, bread, cheese, and the like.

Stock Up on Ready-to-Eat Snacks and Drinks

This is specifically for unexpected guests who don’t intend to stay long. Homeowners must have something that can be produced instantly. Without items like these, there is nothing to be offered to the guests. These snacks and drinks are especially useful if there is no one else to cook while the guest is being entertained. Being ready-to-eat does not necessarily mean less nutritious food.

Research on Easy-to-Cook Recipes

The Internet is virtually a treasure trove of easy-to-prepare meals to help in those last minute cooked food requirements.  There are thousands of recipes that can be done using the simplest cooking method and process. Some literally just toss ingredients all together which are just perfect for the not-to-serious cooks in the house.

Freeze Prepared Meals

There are many food preparations that can freeze perfectly, ready to be pulled out when the sudden need arises. Homemakers must take note however of the maximum storing period of the prepared food. They should be consumed by the family in lieu of guests before they are wasted. A fresh batch must always be prepared.

Set Aside Some Money for Emergencies

Ordering food for delivery is always more expensive. Sometimes however, there is no other way especially when we are talking about attending to several guests. It is either this or you invite them to the nearest restaurant. Either one requires ready money.
