Valentine’s Day Breakfast Ideas

February 13, 2011 By Delia

Surprise your loved ones this Valentine’s Day by preparing breakfast. It is also a good idea to decorate the table with flowers to set the mood. Breakfast in bed is also a wonderful idea. Don’t forget to prepare juice and coffee or tea as well. Here are some recipes you can choose from.

You can never go wrong with eggs, Baked Egg Surprise is a delicious treat that is easy to prepare. If you have time, you can cook Spanish Omelette or Eggs Benedict.

If you are in the mood for pancakes you can whip up some Blueberry and Banana Pancakes or Baked Peach Pancakes.

Unfortunately not everyone has time to have breakfast at home. What you can do is prepare something that your partner can take to work like Bartlett Pears Muffins or Apple Cinnamon Streusel Muffins. A Berry Banana Power Smoothie is also a filling drink that can be taken to go. Place a sweet note on the containers for a personal touch.

You don’t have to wait until the evening to celebrate Valentine’s Day. This sweet initiative will definitely brighten up anyone’s day.

Romantic Valentine’s Day Menu

February 12, 2011 By Delia

If you have the time and you want to prepare a delicious meal for your partner this Valentine’s Day, here are a few suggestions. I also included some alternatives. Pick the one your heart desires.

Soup

Lavender Pumpkin Soup is a relaxing and hearty dish that you will surely enjoy.

Apricot Soup is a special treat. It is rich, creamy with a hint of fruit.

Salad

Peppered Camembert and Nectarine Salad “has an unusual blend of tastes and textures”.

Fruity Bacon and Greens is a fruity salad with delicious bacon bits.

Appetizer

Tuna Carpaccio with Alfalfa and Capers is a personal favourite. It is a light and flavourful given the fresh ingredients.

Spiced Fish Kebabs are “tasty skewers” that should be served right off the grill. Use scallops or shrimps if you wish.

Entree

Champagne Shrimp Pasta is a delectable dish with a hint of sweetness. The champagne compliments the shrimps perfectly.

Lamb and Vegetable Pilaf is a comfort food that rocks as a main course. The meaty taste of the lamb and the soft vegetables make this rice dish awesome.

Dessert

Chili Chocolate Fondue is a chocolate recipe with a twist. It is sweet, a little hot and definitely extraordinary.

Black Forest Roulade “is the adult version of the classic jam roll”. Cherries and brandy area perfect combination.

Drinks

Luscious Cocktails is a collection of creamy cocktails you will enjoy

Pomegranate Cocktails use a fruit in season and it makes simple drinks more interesting.

Make sure you set the mood by keeping the lights dimmed, light some candles or aromatherapy oils, buy some flowers and decorate the area with petals. Don’t forget to choose nice music to go along with that.

Classic Valentines Day Meal

February 10, 2011 By Delia

The first meal for the week is a classic menu.

A rough time frame has been included to help it easier to plan and prepare, just to help the special night or day go without a hitch!

Starter
Starting with a true classic starter – Smoked Salmon Pate. A smooth, creamy dish, with plenty of flavour and a treat for the eyes. A simple dish, but widely loved – and quite quick to make at just forty minutes including time to chill!

If you’re not a fan of Fish Pate for a starter, try creating the Walnut, Egg and Cheese Pate. A different taste, so it may be worth preparing some before the big day, and making sure you like it. This pate can also be used as a filling for Stuffed Tomatoes, Peppers or Mushrooms as well! Including time taken to chill, you’re looking at about forty-five to fifty minutes.

Main Course
A true classic dish – Crispy Pork Belly. Although this meal is a Filipino dish, the range of flavours in it give the traditionally popular dinner a great twist. Serve it with some freshly cooked seasonal Vegetables – Roast Potatoes, Parsnips, Carrots and a lovely thick Gravy.

This dish takes around one and a half to two hours to cook – not counting the time used to freeze the meat.

Dessert
White Chocolate Pots – A simply divine White Chocolate and Rum Mousse, this dessert can alternatively be served with Orange Zest or Dark Chocolate to mix the flavours up.

This dish takes around three or four hours to prepare, once the time to chill has been counted!

Alternative Date Places for Valentine’s Day

February 9, 2011 By Delia

Going on a date doesn’t have to be extremely romantic or lavish. It can be a fun and interesting experience that is simple. Here are some interesting restaurants you can visit on this special day. They serve good and affordable food while providing a wonderful experience.

Cafe at the End of the Universe, Los Angeles

This cafeteria style restaurant with a panoramic view of downtown LA and the Hollywood sign is operated by Wolfgang Puck. Its name was inspired by the novel, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe written by Douglas Adams. They serve soups, salads and gourmet sandwiches. Enjoy your meals by the patio or grab a bite before star-gazing through the Observatory’s Zeiss telescope.

Firefly* Tapas Bar, Las Vegas

Firefly is your typical tapas bar that serves a variety of delicious appetizers and entrees. They also serve house specialty sangria which goes well with everything. It is a cozy place where you can eat, drink and talk as well. It is owned by Chef John Simmons. They started with a small restaurant downtown and they have opened a new one in Fremont Street where you have a good view of the Fremont Street Experience.

Elemental is a hole in the wall restaurant that serves affordable food and 100 different kinds of wines. The restaurant has no signage and it has interesting interiors. Expect the owner Phred, to serve you a glass of wine and ask you to taste it before he tells you what it is. You will be surprised that it matches the meal you ordered. Make sure to come in early because the place fills up fast.

Serendipity3, New York

Serendipity is the home of the famous frozen hot chocolate. They have many divine desserts and sweets to choose from. If the name sounds familiar, it is the restaurant from the movie Serendipity which starred Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack. The place may be touristy, but Valentines is a time to indulge especially on things that are sweet. You can head there after dinner or you can skip that and just have dessert.

Ana Mandara Restaurant, San Francisco

Ana Mandara serves delicious modern Vietnamese food and they boast of an extensive wine list too. The name means “beautiful refuge” that is why interiors are elegant, yet warm and casual with a romantic flare. They have a multi tiered dining room, a patio and private dining rooms as well.  It is perfect for Valentines. They also have a bar where you can enjoy more drinks after dinner.

Valentines Day Menus

February 9, 2011 By Delia

Being able to cook for you other half is always a good thing to be able to do – it’s cheaper than eating out, the both of you can get involved if wanted and you can have much more fun too!

Valentines Day

If you’re trying to impress a new beau, or cooking a classic dinner for an old flame then look no further; these meal ideas will be a sure-fire hit, regardless of your ideal outcome!

For the rest of this week, there’s going to be a few different posts going up on different menus – based around the time taken to cook (i.e., last minute ‘oops I forgot’ menu or big and extravagant), the different ingredients and level of cooking skill required, so hopefully there’ll be something for everyone.

Some of the menus will have a slightly modern twist – not everything has to be candles and soft music after all! For best results, practice the dishes before you serve it, so that you can make sure that there are no hidden surprises, and that you’ll like the tastes and textures that are in the meal. And, of course, so that you can seem much more confident whilst explaining how you lightly glazed the vegetables before roasting them, or how you marinated the meat for two or three hours to improve the flavours, textures and aromas in the dish.
