Using Food To Help Heal Mind and Body

January 2, 2017 By Rebecca

You will run across situations whether either your body or your mind become unhealthy in some way or another. And while there are medicinal ways to approach the situations, and there are physical ways to try to rehab yourself, you can also work with nutrition to cure your ills, aches, and pains.

Consider the categories of addiction recovery, postpartum depression, athletic nutrition, morality, and even post-surgery needs. Each of these situations can be helped by the right approach to eating!

Addiction Recovery

Recovering from addiction can be one of the hardest things that people do in their entire lives. And since you need to eat to survive, you might as well figure that what foods you eat during your recovery will either help or hinder your efforts. If you make it to a rehab clinic, the staff there will help you with your nutrition decisions, but if you’re trying to make it on your own, you’ll have to do your own research about what your body needs with respect to the chemical compounds that you’re releasing from your system.

Postpartum Depression

Women who have dealt with postpartum depression know it can be a really low point in their lives as well. A healthy diet will help a person move out of this. There’s a huge distinction between healthy foods and comfort foods, and the right ones will move a mother toward a positive attitude again, and the wrong ones will move her back into the depths of depression that she feels that she can’t control. Talk to a doctor about how nutrition fits into this equation if you have any questions that you need answers for outside of internet searches.

Athletic Nutrition

Athletes have special dietary requirements. This is a given. And in especially punishing sports like football or long-distance running, the foods that you eat may be the difference between recovering before your next performance, or potentially maintaining an injured body that’s in need of certain vitamins and minerals.

Changing Your Diet For Moral Reasons

Many people who choose a vegetarian diet eventually do so for moral reasons. If your mind is bent out of shape because you have trouble reconciling animal cruelty, then you may be in this boat. Just be sure that you do it in a way that isn’t going to make you sick because you’ve changed over too rapidly.

Post-Surgical Diets

After surgery, you have to pay special attention to your diet as well. One thing everyone is going to tell you is to lay off of sugary drinks and drown yourself in water! While it’s healing, your body needs even more H2O than usual, so you might as well pick it as your weapon of choice until you’re completely healed!
