Food gives us the energy we need to get through our days. Everybody knows it’s important to eat a hearty breakfast before taking an exam, and to down a lot of carbohydrates the day before a sporting event. Did you know food can also stimulate your creative energy?
If you’re in a creative rut, the problem may be in your diet. Not eating enough nutritionally rich foods can make you lethargic and grouchy, and can affect your creative output. What foods can help you be creative? How should you eat when you want to be the best artist you can be?
Try New Things
Artist’s block can happen for a variety of reasons, and different solutions work for different artists. Feeling general boredom in your life can be enough to make you creatively blocked. The same old routine makes anybody feel uninspired — and this includes the food you eat. If you’re eating the same peanut butter and jelly sandwich and the same frozen dinner every day, it’s hard to drum up the interest to create.
Simply trying new foods can be enough to get your creativity flowing. Try out a new recipe, or cook with a friend to learn a different way of approaching the same ingredients. You don’t have to break the bank to try new foods; chances are your regular grocery store has plenty of things you’ve never tried.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
One of the best nutrients to send you in a creative direction are those in the omega-3 fatty acid family. Omega-3s are a kind of unsaturated fat. This makes them a healthier than saturated fats, which you typically find in beef and other red meat. Omega-3s can be found in fish, including salmon, tuna, and mackerel. They’re also found in nuts.
Omega-3s have widespread health benefits which can boost your creativity. Positive effects omega-3s offer your brain include resistance to Alzheimer’s and dementia. Omega-3s have also been linked to fighting certain mental illnesses, specifically depression and ADHD. Both depression and ADHD can negatively impact your creative output. By increasing your omega-3 intake, you can improve your mood and attention span, making it easier to make art.
Green tea contains antioxidants, and therefore offers a lot of health benefits. People who drink a lot of green tea tend to age better, and have better concentration abilities. Green tea contains caffeine, but not too much — making it perfect for boosting your attention span without the negative side effects of overcaffeination (diarrhea, anxiety, tremors).
In a culture obsessed with cutting calories, it can be hard to remember that you actually need them to survive. If you find yourself feeling worn out, irritable, and hungry, you may simply be not eating enough. It’s extremely difficult to concentrate when you’re hungry. Once you get too hungry, you may not even feel like eating anymore.
It’s important for both your health and your creativity to eat enough. Bring food with you throughout the day so you have a snack available when you’re hungry. Don’t make yourself wait too long between meals.
