Given the fact that some comfort food are too calorie-rich to be considered healthy even when eaten infrequently, there is always the option of making a healthier version. One can treat the modification as helping to perpetuate a tradition. Family members can whip up their own versions, giving more reasons for family to come together.

Just like anything else, the consumption of comfort food of the caloric kind becomes bad when carried to the extremes or at least beyond the amount which can still be efficiently handled by the body.
